Gause Real Estate
Gause is named after William J. Gause, a settler who moved to the community in 1872 and built a home out of lumber hauled from Montgomery. In 1873, he gave right-of-way and 100 acres of land to the International-Great Northern Railroad (I&GN), causing the area to grow. A schoolhouse that doubled as a church was built in 1876.
Gause had approximately 300 residents in 1884 and two steam-powered cotton gins and two churches. The Gause Independent School District was established in 1905. The population reached its peak around 1915, when 1,000 people lived in the community. Gause slowly declined over the next few decades and the bank closed in 1927 after 17 years in operation. There was a strong railroad connection and Gause was a shipping stop for Milam County farmers who shipped, cottonseed oil, cotton and corn.
At the peak of Gause’s population, there were 1,000 people living there. The population declined to just over 200 people in the 1970s, although currently the population is experiencing a dramatic increase as people are leaving the big cities behind and escaping to the small-town communities like Gause.
