Giddings Real Estate
The land where Giddings is now located was once a part of the land granted to Stephen F. Austin in 1821 for a colony in Spanish Texas, later becoming part of Robertson Colony.
Giddings was founded in 1871 when the Houston Central Railway made its way to the area and it is possible that the area gained its name from Jabez Deming Giddings, who was a key player in bringing the railway to the Giddings area. He traveled to the area from Pennsylvania in 1838 to claim the land bounty for his brother Giles A. Gidding, who was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. Another theory claims that the city was named after Jabez’s other brother, Dewitt Clinton Giddings.
The early settlers in the new town were mainly pioneers from the nearby communities like Shady Grove and Old Evergreen. The wide streets were the distinguishing characteristic of the town. Gidding’s first church was established in 1871. After the civil war ended, freed slaves migrated from the farms and plantations and settled in Giddings.
Early businesses in Giddings included a blacksmith shop and saloon, a millinery shop, a saddle and harness shop and an oil mill. The courthouse in Giddings was building in 1878, but burned down and was re-constructed in 1899.
Giddings’ rich history plants a seed for the community to come together and grow as a tight-knit family in a town that people love to call home.
