Lyons Real Estate
Two miles from Lake Somerville, Lyons, Texas is an unincorporated community 15 miles northwest of Brenham in Burleson County. There's a post office, gas station, and grill in the middle of the town. That's how you know you're here.
We've never been a bustling community, but we do have the traditional Texas beginnings that include agriculture, railroads, and ranches. Cotton, grain, and cattle were the big three during the railway days. After those days faded, Lyons real estate was the topic of oil prospectors. The real estate in Lyons is still suitable for farming, or for grazing cattle and horses.
Living in Lyons
Despite our small size, Lyons has a big appetite for recreation and fun. Lake Somerville is two miles away, and some of the big ranches utilize their acres for hunting and fishing camps. It's the outside lover's year-round playground. In the summer, we head to the lake, and when the days get shorter, we retreat to the woods or the ball games.
The entire Lake Somerville is part of the Somerville Reservoir and covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. The area is under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's management, and technically has four parks within the zone. There are Nails Creek on the south end and Birch Creek on the north shore. Between the two are 13 miles of trails for biking, hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching. This zone is officially known as the Lake Somerville Trailway System.
Nails Creek and Birch Creek both offer kayak and canoe rentals for some time close to the water without the engine noise. Take binoculars for a chance to spot some birds in flight during the spring and fall. We are right along the flight path for the migratory foul on their way to Mexico, quite the sight to behold.
On the lake itself, you can watch or participate in fishing tournaments, hop on a boat or jet ski, and have fun in the sun. Overlook Park and Lake Somerville Marina will supply you with whatever provisions necessary to have a good time on the water. Guests can stay a while in the campgrounds or a cabin.
Welch Park at Lake Somerville is the site of Dam Lakefest and state BBQ Cook-off Championship, usually happening the 3rd weekend in July. If you check the Burleson County Chamber of Commerce event calendar, you'll find Welch Park the site of year-round gatherings.
Four miles down the trails from Nails Creek is Flag Pond and the Flag Pond Nature Theater. Here visitors can engage in wildlife photography, nature study, and outdoor classrooms.
