Marquez, Texas is just 16 miles west of Centerville, 62 miles northwest of Huntsville, and 53 miles north of Bryan, College Station. The community has approximately 297 residents, who are the foundation of the town and what makes the town so unique to Texas.
Marquez earned its name from the original land-grantee, Maria de la Marquez. The town is built on the tracks of the International-Great Northern Railroad that came through the town in 1871.

Marquez is located on the Missouri Pacific Railroad at the intersection of U.S. Highway 79 and State Highway 7, just sixteen miles west of Centerville in Leon County. The town was set to be a station on the International Great Northern Railroad in 1871 and was named after Maria de la Marquez, who was the original land grant owner. Main Street in Marquez runs parallel to the International-Great Northern Railroad tracks and is one of the main attractions in the spacious town.
In 1872 the first post office opened and in the next years, the one-room Silo Church served as a schoolhouse. The Marquez Masonic Lodge opened in 1875 and a Woodmen of the World chapter was established in 1883. By the year 1884, Marquez had 150 residents, a gristmill, a cotton gin, two general stores, a hotel and a saloon. Just 13 years later, the town had grown to 350 people and had three churches, two hotels, a brick factory, four general stores, a saloon and one mill and gin. In 1898, Marquez was served by the weekly paper, the Marquez Times. The population grew to 482 and the first telephone line popped up in 1902. Leon Academy, a private school, opened in 1902 and had an enrollment of 166 students.
Education in Marquez
Students in Marquez attend schools in the Leon Independent School District. The ISD provides a well-rounded approach to education including extracurricular activities, athletics, challenging academic programs as well as specialized developmental segments for special needs children.
The school mascot is the Cougar. The district offers PK-12 programs covering extracurricular activities all the way to technology.
Leon Elementary School’s current theme for the 2015-2016 school year was Sailing the SEAS (successfully educating all students). The goal for Leon Elementary is for each student to continue to reach high standards and to work with each student to ensure they have all the tools they need to be successful.
The Leon Junior High staff and administrators are committed to inspiring students to achieve academic excellence within the community. They are committed to strengthening the communication between the educators and the students and parents.
Leon High School strives on working with the community to provide and atmosphere where all students feel welcome and cared for.
All schools in Leon ISD continue to serve students and faculty in the best way possible to create a better learning environment for students to thrive through academic programs and extracurricular activities like sports and clubs.
