History of Millican
Millican is on the Southern Pacific line at the intersection of Farm roads 2154 and 159, just between the Navasota and Brazos rivers, fifteen miles southeast of College Station in southern Brazos County. The beautiful rolling hills of the countryside are all part of the East Texas timberlands. Abundant and fruitful farmlands, natural resources and wild turkey and deer all brought settlers to Brazos County.
The area had been named Millican after it was settled by Robert Millican and his son Dr. Elliott Millican in the 1820s. Twenty five years later the town was known as Millican Crossroads and the community got its first post office in 1849, followed by a stagecoach line that extended from Houston through Millican in 1850. Dr. Elliot Millican sold the northern part of his land, three miles north of the older Millican Crossroads on December 14, 1859 and the new town was named after him.
Between 1860 and 1867, Millican was the terminus of the Houston and Texas Central Railway and the community began to prosper and build schools and churches. At this point in history, Millican was the largest city north of Galveston and Houston. By 1864, Millican had reached a population of 3,000 people, but the population dropped after the yellow fever epidemic. By 1883, the small town had two steam gristmills, four churches, a cotton gin, and a school with eighty students and two teachers.
In the 1920s, Phillips Petroleum Company drilled a 17,000 food well into a salt dome nearby, but found no oil. In 1930, Highway 6 bypassed Millican and 60 years later the town had a population of 100 people, a volunteer fire station, two cemeteries, three churches, a post office, a fertilizer plant and a community center.
